Bring Fido to These 6 Northern Virginia Fall Dog Festivals

These local events celebrate our canine family members.

By Kate Oczypok September 4, 2025 at 7:00 am

Pets are part of the family, and these six dog festivals recognize that. Whether your dog loves to swim or wants to partake in some hot dogs for “Dogtoberfest,” here are local events celebrating our furry friends.

Dog Daze 2025

September 6, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

The dogs-only swimming event at Lake Fairfax Park’s Water Mine location marks the end of pool season. During the swimming party, there will be a canine resource fair with pet-related vendors presented by the Fairfax County Park Authority in partnership with the Fairfax County Park Foundation. Dogs must be up to date with vaccines, handlers must be 18 years or older, and puppies younger than three months old are not permitted. 1400 Lake Fairfax Dr., Reston

Fredericksburg Dog Mart

September 27, 9:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

The oldest dog event in America is celebrating 327 years. Enjoy activities like a search–and–rescue demo, a dog show and judging, adoption showcase, and more. Burgers, fries, hot dogs, baked goods, and cold drinks will be for sale. A raffle, auction table, and other exhibits will also be on display. 12400 Herndon Rd., Spotsylvania

Dogtoberfest at Shipgarten

September 27, 1 p.m.

Bring your family, friends, and furry best friend for Shipgarten’s “Dogtoberfest.” It includes dog games in an off-leash dog park and a dog owner and relay race. There’s a 4 p.m. hot dog eating contest where the fastest to eat five gets $25. Live music will run from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 7581 Colshire Dr., Tysons

Dogfest Washington DC

October 4, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Celebrate 50 years of Canine Companions at Reston Town Center Pavilion. Dogs are encouraged to attend the free, family-friendly event. Canine Companions provides service dogs to those with disabilities and facility dogs to individuals working in educational, healthcare, and criminal justice settings. 1825 Discovery St., Reston

Paws in the Park

October 12, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Paws in the Park is a free event at Oronoco Bay Park in Old Town. It includes live music, activities, local vendors, food, and adoptable animals. A silent auction will be held throughout the event, too. Pets are welcome to attend, and the festival benefits the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. 100 Madison St., Alexandria

McLean Pet Fest

October 12, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Grab your best furry friend and head to McLean Central Park for a day of live music, Fido’s Bone Bar, and Bark-a-Lounge Beer and Wine Garden (with a miniature pony delivering treats to your table). Pet-related exhibitors and pet rescues, adoptions, pet sitters, groomers, and more will be on hand to showcase their services. Lunch will be provided by food trucks. And if you stick around, there’s a pet parade at 3 p.m. 1468 Dolley Madison Blvd., McLean
