Must-Visit Independent Bookstores Throughout Northern Virginia

These NoVA bookshops are the perfect places to browse for the next addition to your TBR.

For a true book lover, there may be no better way to spend a day than getting lost in the shelves of a great bookstore. Luckily, our region is full of them. These independent bookstores throughout Northern Virginia have books new and old, spanning countless genres. Spend a few hours browsing their collections, and who knows? You might just find your next favorite book.

Friends to Lovers

This little shop in Alexandria is fully dedicated to all things romance. After a fire destroyed its interior just days after it opened in the fall, the shop is now back open in a new location. Head here for books all about love, and keep an eye on its social medias for special events. 301 Cameron St., Alexandria

Old Town Books

This bookstore, located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, is small but mighty. It is always sure to have the latest in contemporary fiction, hot-topic political memoirs, best-sellers, and cult favorites that you don’t want to miss. It has several book clubs that you can join. Plus, head over to Old Town Books Junior, the adjacent space dedicated to kids’ books. 130 S. Royal St., Alexandria

Reston’s Used Books

The shelves are absolutely jam-packed with everything from rare editions to well-loved paperbacks. Even if you went in looking for just one book, don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending hours poring over its collections. Lake Anne Village Center: 1623 Washington Plz. N., Reston

Scrawl Books

Scrawl Books, located in Reston Town Center, is as much a community gathering space as it is a place to buy books. It runs a consistent slate of author signings, story times, and trivia nights so people can get together and talk about the books they love. Reston Town Center: 11911 Freedom Dr., Reston

One More Page Books

As if books weren’t good enough, One More Page also keeps a stock of wine and chocolate. Check out its selection of signed editions, and don’t miss the “#OMP Reads” recommendations – these experienced book lovers aren’t likely to lead you astray. 2200 N. Westmoreland St., Ste. 101, Arlington

Bards Alley

This beloved Vienna shop has been a staple since 2017. Visit here for knowledgeable recommendations, an impressive selection of new books, and a cozy section for young readers. The shop also regularly hosts book clubs, author talks, and other fun literary events. 110 Church St. NW, Vienna

Font Books & Gifts

This bookstore is just what McLean needed. Owner Amber Taylor previously worked at Arlington’s One More Page Books before venturing off to start her own store. Not only will you find books of all genres on the shelves, but also greeting cards, journaling supplies, stickers, and more. 6262B Old Dominion Dr., McLean

McKay Used Books

McKay Used Books is a large store that has been around for over 40 years, and Manassas just wouldn’t be the same without it. It’s about more than just books, too. You can bring in books of all kinds, movies, puzzles, games, and even Legos to sell or trade for store credit. Manaport Shopping Center: 8345 Sudley Rd., Manassas

Middleburg Books

The indie shop is located in a building built in 1750 that makes the coziest spot for a bookstore. Browse the shelves and get lost in its selection of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books. 17 S. Madison St., Middleburg

Riverby Books

This downtown Fredericksburg shop has a full assortment of used and rare books, including some signed copies. Bring in your used books to sell them for cash or store credit, no appointment necessary. 805 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

Books and Other Found Things

Visiting this store is more like visiting the home of an old friend. It’s located in a historic house right in downtown Leesburg, and each room is bursting with bookshelves full of a lovingly curated collection of used books, trinkets, and an assortment of art from local artisans. It should be noted that the store sits in a 1790 building that is not completely accessible to everyone. 13 Loudoun St. SW, Leesburg

Birch Tree Bookstore

There’s always something fun going on in this Leesburg bookshop. There’s a roster of several monthly book clubs focused on different genres, including historical fiction, romance, and science fiction. Stop by to join a club, attend an event with an author, or just search the inventory for your next read. 11 W. Market St., First Floor, Leesburg
