The Virginia Scenic Railway (VSR) kicked off its popular annual Santa Express this weekend, and has launched a new second location in Louisa. The Louisa location joins the Staunton station in hosting the Santa Express (which is currently sold out), then will eventually open for additional rides in 2026.
VSR is owned and operated by the Buckingham Branch Railroad. In 2022, it began offering scenic rides on vintage trains from Staunton through the Shenandoah Valley. It offers two excursions — the Blue Ridge Flyer and the Allegheny Special. It also runs specialty rides like Murder on the Menu and the Sip & Savor Express.
Now, VSR has expanded into Central Virginia. It restored two train depots in Louisa that used to welcome passengers and freight trains, according to a news release. The passenger depot at 103 Church Ave. dates back to 1899. When it stopped working as a railway depot, the adjacent freight depot served as storage for the Maddox Feed Store.
VSR hopes to offer new excursions through Louisa in 2026. Trip themes may include railroad history, murder mysteries, and wine tastings, according to the release.

This is a big win for the town and county — boosting tourism, supporting small businesses, and strengthening our local economy,” said Tracy Hale Clark, executive director of the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce.
