Buying holiday gifts doesn\u2019t\u00a0necessarily need to\u00a0mean a trip to the mall or an online shopping spree. Instead,\u00a0you can\u00a0turn to\u00a0NoVA\u2019s\u00a0thrift, vintage, and consignment stores to find gifts for anyone on your list.\u00a0We spoke with the owner of one of Alexandria\u2019s vintage stores for some tips on secondhand gifting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainable, Affordable, and Personal <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0\u201cThriftmas\u201d trend<\/a>\u00a0has been circulating on\u00a0social media\u00a0for over a\u00a0year. Influencers share ways that shoppers can find vintage or gently used items \u2014 often for lower\u00a0price-points.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an idea that many shoppers are on board with. According to a study from Capital One Shopping<\/a>, 66 percent of consumers are open to receiving a secondhand gift. And 62 percent think that gifting secondhand apparel is more socially acceptable than it was five years ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study notes the top reason for shopping for\u00a0gifts secondhand\u00a0was affordability, followed closely by sustainability.\u00a0(The holidays are a notoriously wasteful season, with Americans producing\u00a025 percent more waste<\/a>\u00a0than the rest of the year.)\u00a0The desire to find a unique gift was another key influence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Meaningful Gifts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Willow Wright, owner of vintage store Urban Redeux in Alexandria<\/a>, adds that secondhand gifting can lead to a more thoughtful, meaningful gift than you\u2019d find at a big box store.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re limited with your selection, and you have to think, \u2018Let me really dig down into this person’s personality and let me really think about what they might like,\u2019\u201d Wright says. \u201cYou have to work harder sometimes, but deeper down, I think the meaning is a little bit more special, too.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thrifting a gift also creates an opportunity to tell your recipient the story behind where you found it and why it made you think of them, either in person or with a note, Wright says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cThat little bit of extra thought and consideration sometimes overrides whether or not it’s a super high-value item or not,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cIf we get back to the point of gifting in the first place,\u00a0it’s\u00a0the\u00a0thought that counts. Then it\u00a0doesn’t matter where you get the item.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Thrift Thoughtfully <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So how do you pick out a gift that your recipient will love? First, make your list of who you\u2019re shopping for and what they like. Then, go into the store with an open mind, Wright says.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to really be creative and kind of look at each item as you’re going through,\u201d Wright says. \u201cYou can’t just rush through if it’s your first time. You’ve got to be intentional.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than going in with a set idea of what you want to find, take the time to consider each item you see in the shop and think about who in your life might like it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bundling a few items in a mix of old and new is another way to create great gifts. \u201cYou might pick out a beautiful pair of brass candlesticks, but then pair that with a brand-new set of beautiful spiral candles or something in a color you think they might like,\u201d Wright says. Some other examples she offers are to pair cocktail glasses with a bottle of whiskey or to gift a thrifted mug alongside gourmet coffee or hot cocoa.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the items you\u2019re buying are still in good quality, Wright suggests: \u201cUse all your senses when you’re picking something up. Your hands will never lie to you.\u201d Run your fingers over a piece to feel for chips or cracks, or to see if an item feels too light. And if an item has an odor, it\u2019s best to leave it behind.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also not unusual to find items at thrift or vintage stores that are new with tags or have never been opened.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Shop <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

NoVA has plenty of places to shop for secondhand gifts. For vintage shops<\/a>, check out Urban Redeux,<\/a> plus shops like Lucy Loves<\/a> in Fairfax, Nostalgia<\/a> in Purcellville, and Stardust Vintage & Gift<\/a> in Alexandria.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consignment shops<\/a> are another option, with stores like Wardrobe Rescue<\/a> in Vienna, N\u2019Used<\/a> in Herndon, and New to You<\/a> in McLean.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to thrift stores, there are national brands like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Savers, which also operates Unique in Mosaic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wright suggests looking for thrift stores that benefit good causes. Some examples are Inova\u2019s thrift stores<\/a>, the Look Again Resale Shop<\/a> in Alexandria, the Second Chance Thrift and Gift Store<\/a> in Fairfax, and the Blue Ridge Hospice<\/a> thrift stores.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
