Holiday decorating may look effortless on Pinterest, but behind the scenes, it\u2019s all about strategy, structure, and knowing what works in a real home. That\u2019s where the experts come in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two local pros \u2014 Maria Krupholter, owner of Herndon-based Home & Holiday Designs<\/a>, and Loudoun County-based designer Amy Walton of Amy Walton Design<\/a> \u2014 share their go-to tips for creating a festive home that feels polished, nostalgic, and stress-free.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

All About the Tree<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For Krupholter, it all starts with the tree.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to fluff your tree correctly,\u201d she says. \u201cIf the tree isn\u2019t fluffed well, it\u2019s going to look cheap and full of holes.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Krupholter recommends assembling and fluffing each section before stacking them, which makes it easier to work from the inside out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lighting is the next essential. Even with pre-lit trees, Krupholter adds more lights to build depth and glow.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cLights should come from the inside of the tree, not just the outside,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Oversized ornaments, placed deep within the branches, help reflect that inner sparkle. Smaller ornaments come last, layered toward the outer branches for dimension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ribbon is having a moment again \u2014 just not in the big symmetrical bows of years past. Krupholter suggests a simpler technique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI make two loops with two different ribbons, add two tails, and nestle them inside the tree,\u201d she says. \u201cIt gives you four loops and four tails without overpowering the design.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For toppers, she encourages clients to choose what fits their style \u2014 whether a traditional star or a showier spray of branches. <\/p>\n\n\n

Fresh Pine for Indoor Settings<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Leesburg designer Walton’s approach leans warm, natural, and accessible.\u00a0\u201cChristmas is my absolute favorite to decorate for,\u201d she says. \u201cI love mixing real greens with faux greens \u2014 you get the best of both.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faux garland or wreaths give structure, she says, while fresh clippings deliver that classic holiday fragrance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cAs the live pieces dry out, I just pull them and tuck new ones in,\u201d Walton says. \u201cYou keep the look beautiful without the whole thing wilting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walton also transforms her outdoor flower pots into evergreen arrangements using cut magnolia, pine, holly, and arborvitae.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI leave the soil in the pots and build arrangements right into them,\u201d she says. \u201cThey last longer outdoors, and you can add lights to make them sparkle at night.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, Walton is a real-tree loyalist. \u201cI\u2019m a real-tree girl every year,\u201d she notes, adding that she places lights deep into the branches so ornaments shine from the inside out.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter your strategy,\u00a0both designers agree that holiday decorating should feel personal, joyful and approachable. As Krupholter says, \u201cThe trends change, but the goal doesn\u2019t \u2014 you want your home to feel magical.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
