{"id":528884,"date":"2025-11-24T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/?p=528884"},"modified":"2025-11-21T16:25:51","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T21:25:51","slug":"smithsonian-american-art-museum-highlights-life-and-work-of-grandma-moses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/family\/education\/2025\/11\/24\/smithsonian-american-art-museum-highlights-life-and-work-of-grandma-moses\/","title":{"rendered":"Smithsonian American Art Museum Highlights Life and Work of Grandma Moses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s fitting that a <a href=\"https:\/\/americanart.si.edu\/exhibitions\/grandma-moses?utm_source=si.edu&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=MyVisitSI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new exhibition<\/a> on the work of American artist Anna Mary Robertson \u201cGrandma\u201d Moses opens on November 25 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanart.si.edu\/\">Smithsonian American Art Museum<\/a> (SAAM) \u2014 right before the holiday season. After all, many of Moses\u2019 primitive landscapes focus on holiday traditions and preparations like fall harvests, tables set for feasts, horse-drawn sleighs loaded with cut evergreens, and even Santa and his reindeer flying over a snowy, moonlit valley.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Grandma-Moses.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-528887\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Clara Sipprell, Grandma Moses, C. 1950, Gelatin Silver Print, National Portrait Gallery, Bequest of Phyllis Fenner, NPG.82.188<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Moses was born in upstate New York in 1860. Her century-long life spanned American history from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Most of her years were devoted to farm labor and caring for her family. It wasn\u2019t until she was 77 \u2014 after her husband died and her children moved away \u2014 that Moses had time to teach herself how to paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Thanksgiving festival art display at Gimbels department store in New York City in 1940 launched Moses on her unlikely path to fame at age 80. In October, before the Gimbels showing, gallerist Otto Kallir had introduced Moses to the public with her first solo exhibition, <em>What a Farm Wife Painted<\/em>. Under Kallir\u2019s representation, Moses\u2019 popularity steadily expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collaboration with Hallmark in 1947 produced greeting cards that spread the artist\u2019s nostalgic, rosy vision of the American dream around the globe, and soon her images were marketed on draperies, linens, dishware, and other household objects. But as the tiny, bespectacled widow\u2019s fame and success increased, many in the art world refused to accept her as a serious artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-merger-of-work-memories-and-creativity\">The Merger of Work, Memories, and Creativity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Grandma Moses: A Good Day\u2019s Work<\/em> is on display at SAAM through July 25, 2026. The title was based on a quote from Moses\u2019 1952 memoir,<em> My Life\u2019s History:<\/em> \u201cI have written my life in small sketches. &#8230; I look back on my life like a good day\u2019s work, it was done and I feel satisfied with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Oaken-Bucket.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-528888\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Grandma Moses, The Old Oaken Bucket, 1943, oil on high-density fiberboard, Collection of Frank <br>Tosto, Promised gift to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, in memory of Dr. R. David Sudarsky, <br>\u00a9 Grandma Moses Properties Co., NY<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>SAAM head curator Randall Griffey says the title encapsulates how Moses thought about her life and art, noting that work is a prevalent theme throughout the memoir. \u201cIt appears in seemingly endless variations \u2014 \u2018women\u2019s work,\u2019 \u2018farm work,\u2019 \u2018house work,\u2019 and more,\u201d says Griffey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-move-to-virginia\">Move to Virginia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna Mary Robertson left home for good when she was just 12 years old to work as a live-in \u201chired girl\u201d for wealthy neighboring families. At 27, she married Thomas Salmon Moses, a \u201chired man\u201d at one of those homes. The newlyweds soon moved to Staunton, where they took over as tenants for a local farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLess than a week after we were married, we were housekeeping amongst strange people in a strange land,\u201d Moses said in a 1956 radio interview.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Early-Spring-on-the-Farm.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-528886\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em> Grandma Moses, Early Springtime on the Farm, 1945, oil on high-density fiberboard, Smithsonian <br>American Art Museum, Promised gift from the Kallir Family, \u00a9 Grandma Moses Properties Co., NY<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The couple remained in the Shenandoah region for 18 years, working multiple farms and having 10 children (only five survived infancy) before returning north and buying a farm in Eagle Bridge, New York. When Thomas died in 1927, Moses continued to manage the farm, where she later created all of her paintings. She was 101 when she died on December 13, 1961.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-virginia-years-and-influences\">Virginia Years and Influences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leslie Umberger, SAAM senior curator of folk and self-taught art, says she was excited to delve into Moses\u2019 Virginia years for this project. \u201cMoses is almost always positioned as a dyed-in-the-wool New Englander, but her Southern period was very important, and, to date, it has received little attention,\u201d says Umberger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/December.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-528889\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Grandma Moses, December, 1943, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Promised \ngift from the Kallir Family, \u00a9 Grandma Moses Properties Co., NY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Umberger cites Moses\u2019 1947 painting <em>Apple Butter Making<\/em> as a joyful late-summer Shenandoah Valley activity that lingered in Moses\u2019 memory long after her family returned north. The paintings <em>Shenandoah Valley South Branch<\/em> and <em>Shenandoah Valley (1861 News of the Battle)<\/em> show the point where the Shenandoah River intersects the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the foot of Bolivar Heights, a strategic site overlooking Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, during the Civil War.
