These Northern Virginia homes\u2019 interiors all have <a href=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/home\/2025\/11\/11\/add-touches-of-english-country-style-to-your-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English countryside\u2013inspired elements<\/a>, and the design experts let us in on their process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unfussy-elegance\">Unfussy Elegance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.storiecollective.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Storie Collective<\/a> founder and creative director Sara Swabb updated a 2005 Craftsman in North Arlington to fit her clients\u2019 desires for a modern yet livable upgrade. She incorporated natural stone, raw wood, antique furniture, warm colors, and performance fabrics to create an accessible living environment that was both beautiful and \u201cunfussy\u201d for her clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wood-burning fireplace in the living room already gave the home a cozy and welcoming feel, Swabb says. She retained the Craftsman bones while adding Old-World charm with details such as Victorian moldings. Natural stone surfaces like travertine and slate may already have \u201csome imperfections and a tactile quality to it, which is consistent with English country style.\u201d Fixtures, such as an Urban Electric light fixture that\u2019s \u201ca modern take on an old lantern,\u201d can be a way to incorporate English country influence without going overboard if you\u2019re hesitant to lean too far into it, Swabb says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swabb also added warmth with textured fabrics (many from U.K. vendors); vintage and antique furnishings sourced from places including 1stDibs; raw and reclaimed wood; and nature-inspired hues. An ochre-colored chaise lounge by Amber Interiors in the primary bedroom was \u201can elevated way to bring in color for a house like this,\u201d Swabb says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reclaimed pine kitchen table from Elsie Green adds a rustic element that, Swabb says, works well alongside finished wood pieces. She encourages those seeking an English country style for their homes not to be afraid of mixing \u201cwood finishes and wood species and stones and stone species. As long as it\u2019s all natural, it\u2019s OK to mix those. And I think that is something that English country homes do really well. If it\u2019s natural, it\u2019s OK to mix, it\u2019s OK to break some rules, but doing it in a very sophisticated and subdued way is the way to accomplish that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cape-Cod_Stacy-Zarin-Goldberg.webp\" alt=\"Cape Cod style home\" class=\"wp-image-528715\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Courtesy Stacy Zarin Goldberg<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cozy-cape-cod\">Cozy Cape Cod<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a couple decided to move closer to family in Arlington, <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmarchitects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GTM Architects<\/a> took on the challenge of designing a functional Cape Cod\u2013style home with Steve Smith of <a href=\"https:\/\/ventura-group.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ventura Group LLC<\/a> as the builder. Both the home\u2019s construction and its interiors have elements of English country design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple wanted \u201cearthy tones, high-end materials, paneling, siding \u2026 [and] reclaimed pieces,\u201d says architect Luke Olson. They requested a boot room \u2014 the British version of a mudroom \u2014 with a side entry space where the homeowner imagined herself throwing off her boots after gardening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another custom feature is a reading nook with plenty of space for book-filled shelves off the sloped-roof, second-floor landing. In the study, the homeowners worked an antique fireplace into the paneling in the room and collaborated with a company in Pennsylvania for the stick work. They chose reclaimed wood for the flooring and added touches like a grandfather clock to tie it all together. An antique secretary desk serves as a space-saving, quintessentially European addition that speaks to the project\u2019s style and functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/northernvirginiamag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Powder-Room_Angela-Newton-Roy-Photography.webp\" alt=\"English country style powder room\" class=\"wp-image-528714\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Courtesy Angela Newton Roy Photography<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-packing-a-punch\">Packing a Punch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis space feels otherworldly,\u201d says Kristin Harrison, founder and principal designer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiaandhunt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia + Hunt Design House<\/a>, of the powder room she helped design in a McLean home. \u201cI find in British design, they rely less on large square footage when designing and can make even the smallest of spaces impactful. This philosophy is something we abide by as a firm.
