We asked some local organizations for the best ways to help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-adopt-or-foster\">Adopt or Foster<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Katherine Covington of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/animalservices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairfax County Animal Shelter<\/a> says that adoption is the most direct way you can help. But if you\u2019re not in the position to add another pet permanently to your household, you can foster.&nbsp; \u201cA foster stay might last only a few days \u2014 giving a pet a break from the shelter \u2014 or a few weeks while they heal from an injury or surgery. &#8230; We provide food, supplies, and medical care so fosters can focus on comfort and care,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-donate-supplies-money-or-food\">Donate Supplies, Money, or Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur top needs are items that support our fosters, such as crates, dog food, cozy blankets, and other essentials,\u201d says Tara Zurawski of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.project-secondchance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project Second Chance in Alexandria<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can donate supplies online through sites like Amazon and Chewy,\u201d says Mirah Horowitz of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luckydoganimalrescue.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lucky Dog Animal Rescue<\/a>. And ordering and shipping pet food directly to a rescue or dropping it off locally \u201ccan make an immediate difference,\u201d says Zurawski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monetary donations are always welcome, says Kerry Whitlock of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingstreetcats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">King Street Cats<\/a> in Leesburg. \u201cThis can be online, via mail, or through the Combined Federal Campaign for federal government workers and retirees.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-donate-unused-pet-medications\">Donate Unused Pet Medications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe especially appreciate heartworm preventatives and flea and tick preventatives, as these are extremely costly for rescues to provide. We can also accept certain pet medications \u2014 up to one year past expiration \u2014 that we use with our veterinarian\u2019s direction. In the past, donated cardiac medication has saved our rescue hundreds, even thousands of dollars when we\u2019ve had a dog with the same prescription,\u201d says Zurawski.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-volunteer-your-time\">Volunteer Your Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot operate without volunteers. Our biggest needs are on Saturdays and Sundays, but we need help on weekdays with transporting animals or meds from one location to another, as well as with helping us get laundry and data entry done. You can volunteer from home or in person,\u201d says Horowitz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spread-the-word\">Spread the Word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSharing our adoptable dogs, fundraising posts, and rescue updates on social media is incredibly helpful,\u201d says Zurawski.
