Emmy-, Grammy-, Oscar-, and Tony\u2013winner John Legend will be appearing at Wolf Trap<\/a> to celebrate the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of his debut album\u00a0Get Lifted<\/em>, which won three Grammys.\u00a0<\/em>Both nights of his show \u2014 on September 2 and 3 \u2014 will be backed by his full band. He will perform songs from Get Lifted<\/em>, as well as others from throughout his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legend<\/a> talks to\u00a0Northern Virginia Magazine<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>about the tour, his four children with model and author Chrissy Teigen, his next appearance on\u00a0The Voice,\u00a0<\/em>and visiting family in Northern Virginia.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you ever imagine you\u2019d be talking about\u00a0Get Lifted<\/em>\u00a020 years later. And all the amazing things you\u2019ve done over the last two decades?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Well, I envisioned having a long career. This is what I wanted \u2014 to make music that was going to last and really connect with people for a long time, but you never know what\u2019s going to happen. All my dreams have come true and beyond. But I did have high aspirations for myself back then, so I really do feel grateful that it\u2019s happened the way that I wanted it to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember the struggles and tough times before I got a record deal, being told no many times and that I wasn\u2019t ready yet or that the music wasn\u2019t there yet. When I go back to that\u00a0Get Lifted\u00a0<\/em>era, I remember all that, because I wrote most of the songs before I was signed. And so all those experiences are with me when I\u2019m performing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last 20 years, you met Chrissy, got married, and had four kids. What would you say to your kids if any of them decide to follow in your footsteps?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m just encouraging them to follow what they\u2019re excited about. Luna (Legend and Teigen\u2019s oldest child) seems very excited about performing. She\u2019s been in school musicals, takes piano and vocal lessons, and she\u2019s done dance and gymnastics, and is also very visually creative. I can see her following in mine and Chrissy\u2019s footsteps, to a degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The younger ones, we will see. But either way we try to give them the opportunity to try things and see what they really love, then we\u2019ll encourage them to focus on one or two things they love the most.<\/p>\n\n\n

You\u2019re taking a break from\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0this upcoming season. Do you think you\u2019ll come back in the future?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Well, it\u2019s interesting, because\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>tapes two seasons at the same time. Even though I\u2019m not going to appear in the fall season, we\u2019re taping the spring season kind of in back-to-back weeks with the fall season. So it doesn\u2019t feel like I\u2019m taking a break. It may feel like a break to the audience, because they won\u2019t see me in the fall. We\u2019re already filming with Adam [Levine] and Kelly [Clarkson], for the spring. I love working with them, and I\u2019ve been working with them both since my first season there. We\u2019re having a lot of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve played at Wolf Trap multiple times now. What do you like most about playing there? What can people expect at show?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re really celebrating\u00a0Get Lifted,\u00a0<\/em>so we\u2019re going to do every single song from the album. Then we\u2019ll be throwing in some of my hits from other albums throughout the years. We will do some fun covers connecting back to that era of\u00a0Get Lifted\u00a0<\/em>that inspired me, from the late \u201890s and early \u201800s era. It\u2019s a fun chance for everybody to get nostalgic and reminisce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love the vibe of an amphitheater, and I do a lot of them during the summers. We especially love Wolf Trap, and it\u2019s one of our favorite venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have any favorite places to visit when you\u2019re in Virginia?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I have family that live in Fredericksburg, so I try to see them when I\u2019m there. My mother just got remarried, and my new stepfather has family there, too. We have some close friends that live in the area as well, so we\u2019ll be catching up with lots of old friends, family, and cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
