The park is dog-friendly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Alexandria<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"alexandria\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/HeritageTrail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alexandria Heritage Trail<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>This 23-mile trail through historic Old Town Alexandria takes the rider past much of the town\u2019s historic landmarks. Guided bike tours are offered twice a year, and portions of the trail are off-road, though the entire trail is paved and well designated, with sidewalks offering a respite at the more challenging portions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gwmp\/planyourvisit\/forthunt.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fort Hunt<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>Take a midday stroll, enjoy a picnic or revel in a summer concert at Fort Hunt, on land which once belonged to George Washington and is rich with military history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gwmp\/planyourvisit\/mtvernontrail.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mount Vernon Trail<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>Just over 18 miles long, the trail runs alongside the Potomac River from Mount Vernon to Theodore Roosevelt Island in Rosslyn. One of the most popular trails in the area, it runs through Old Town and four miles in Arlington with views of the Navy Marine Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Entirely paved and fairly flat, there are few large challenges; only one large climb exists near Mount Vernon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitalexandriava.com\/things-to-do\/outdoor-activities-and-wellness\/parks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Waterfront Parks<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>Old Town, the Metro-D.C. area\u2019s largest preserved colonial neighborhood, is best known for its historic sites and centuries-old structures, but it\u2019s also home to half a dozen interconnected riverfront parks paralleling the Mount Vernon Trail on the west and the Potomac River on the east.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fairfax<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"fairfax\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/bull-run-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Bull Run Regional Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Centreville<\/em><br \/>\nThis park is over 1,500 acres and offers several trails: the Bluebell Trail, which features wildflowers in spring; the Occoquan Water Trail; and the trailhead of the 19-mile Bull Run Occoquan Trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/burkelakepark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Burke Lake Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Fairfax Station<\/em><br \/>\nThe park\u2019s 218-acre lake is surrounded by a 4.7-mile gravel trail for walking, running or biking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.burkecentreweb.com\/sub_category_list.asp?category=43&amp;title=Trails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Burke VRE Trail at Pohick Stream Valley Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Springfield<\/em><br \/>\nThis trail connects to shopping center, neighborhoods and the Virginia Railway Express via a paved pedestrian and bike path.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/eclawrence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ellanor C. Lawrence Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Chantilly<\/em><br \/>\nIn addition to the Walney Visitor Center, Ellanor C. Lawrence Park has 4 miles of trails showcasing streams, meadows and a pond.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/fountainhead-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fountainhead Regional Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Fairfax Station<\/em><br \/>\nFountainhead Regional Park offers biking and equestrian trails, plus the Occoquan Water Trail and Bull Run Occoquan Trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grfa\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Great Falls Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>McLean<\/em><br \/>\nPerhaps NoVA\u2019s most dramatic and popular park, Great Falls is a must-see for Metro-D.C. area residents. It\u2019s best known for its waterfalls and rapids, which can be enjoyed from three overlooks, plus 15 miles of hiking and walking trails, 10 miles of horseback riding trails and 5 miles of bike trails.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/hemlock-overlook-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hemlock Overlook Regional Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Clifton<\/em><br \/>\nWith trails featuring views of hemlock and beech trees, streams and a creek, plus the Bull Run Occoquan Trail, Hemlock Overlook has several hiking options.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/huntley-meadows-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Huntley Meadows Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Alexandria<\/em><br \/>\nLook for wildlife as you hike Huntley Meadows\u2019 half-mile boardwalk trail over the wetlands and the rest of the park\u2019s 1.75-mile trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/pohick-bay-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pohick Bay Regional Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Lorton<\/em><br \/>\nSituated on an inlet of the Potomac River, Pohick Bay features a network of hiking trails, a 3.3-mile equestrian trail and the Occoquan Water Trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/riverbend-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Riverbend Park<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Great Falls<\/em><br \/>\nA section of the Potomac Heritage Trail runs along the Potomac River in this park, along with three other park trails: Bootlegger Trail, Follow the Hollows Trail and Madison\u2019s Escape trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/scottsrun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Scotts Run Nature Preserve<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><em>McLean<\/em><br \/>\nThe trails in Scott\u2019s Run Nature Preserve lead to a scenic view of a waterfall on the Potomac River.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/meadowlark-botanical-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Washington &amp; Old Dominion Trail<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>Access points in Vienna, Reston and Herndon<br \/>\nThe 45-mile route from Shirlington to Purcellville is paved on top of what used to be the Washington &amp; Old Dominion Railroad.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Loudoun<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"loudoun\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/algonkian-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Algonkian Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Sterling<\/em><br \/>\nThis 838-acre park offers plenty of entertainment. There are open areas and fields for pick-up games, picnic shelters, boat launches, an 18-hole golf course and mini golf, paved hiking trails and Volcano Island Waterpark. You can also make a weekend of the park and rent out one of the riverfront cottages right along the Potomac.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Ashburn-Park-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashburn Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Ashburn<\/em><br \/>\nWalk the trails of Ashburn Park to enjoy views of a creek in a wooded setting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/staging.northernvirginiamag.com\/guides\/trails-fall-foliage-views\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ball\u2019s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nThe site of the largest Civil War engagement in Loudoun County, Ball\u2019s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park is now a serene spot for natural wandering and contemplation. A gravesite marks the spot where 54 Union soldiers are buried, all but one of whom are unknown, and there is a monument to the fallen Confederate soldier Sgt. Clinton Hatcher. Guided tours are available.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/bansheereeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nThis 725-acre natural area features wildlife, rolling hills, views of Goose Creek and several trails for hiking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Bles-Park-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bles Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Ashburn<\/em><br \/>\nHikers can find nature trails plus a portion of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail within Bles Park\u2019s 124 acres.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/index.aspx?NID=1285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude Moore Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Sterling<\/em><br \/>\nWith 11 miles of trails, Claude Moore Park offers hikers views of forests, wetlands, ponds and meadows.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Elizabeth-Mills-Riverfront-Park-31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Lansdowne<\/em><br \/>\nPlenty of waterfront views can be found at Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park, with access to the Potomac River and Goose Creek.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/index.aspx?NID=1397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Franklin Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Purcellville<\/em><br \/>\nViews of the Blue Ridge Mountains can be seen from Franklin Park\u2019s 3.5 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/gilberts-corner-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gilbert\u2019s Corner Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nAt Gilbert\u2019s Corner Regional Park, visitors can explore the 156-acre park with hiking trails that is steeped in history.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morvenpark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morven Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nThe former home of Westmoreland Davis, Morven Park is now a place for educational tours through the historic buildings and a major sports park for recreational programs, equestrian events and hiking trails.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudoun.gov\/index.aspx?NID=1284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nIn addition to sports fields, picnic areas and a visitors center, Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park has 3.5 miles of nature trails to explore.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/red-rock-wilderness-overlook-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nTake in the views of the Potomac River as you traipse through this park with winding trails and historic buildings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/rust-sanctuary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rust Sanctuary<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Leesburg<\/em><br \/>\nSixty-eight acres of meadows, forests and ponds make up Rust Sanctuary, which also offers year-round programs including the Fresh Air Kids series for preschoolers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaparks.com\/parks\/washington-and-old-dominion-railroad-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington &amp; Old Dominion Trail<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nAccess points in Ashburn, Leesburg, Purcellville and Sterling<br \/>\nThe 45-mile route from Shirlington to Purcellville is paved on top of what used to be the Washington &amp; Old Dominion Railroad.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Prince William<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"princewilliam\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcparks.org\/pdf\/trail_leitch.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Leitch Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Dale City<\/em><br \/>\nLeashed dogs are welcome on this trail that follows Neabsco Creek.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcgov.org\/government\/dept\/publicworks\/hp\/pages\/bristoe-station-battlefield.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Bristow<\/em><br \/>\nTwo battles were fought on this land that is now a 140-acre historic site in the western part of Prince William County: the Battle of Kettle Run (1862) and the Battle of Bristoe Station (1863). Now it is a park with more than 2.7 miles of walking and equestrian trails.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcgov.org\/government\/dept\/park\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Long Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Haymarket<\/em><br \/>\nFor bikers, hikers and equestrians, James Long Park\u2019s trails feature hills, woods and views of Catharpin Creek.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcgov.org\/government\/dept\/park\/lakeridgepark\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lake Ridge Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Woodbridge<\/em><br \/>\nAccess to the Occoquan Water Trail plus 1.2 miles of hiking trails make Lake Ridge Park a year-round destination for outdoorsy types.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/leesylvania#general_information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leesylvania State Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Woodbridge<\/em><br \/>\nIf you can\u2019t get away for an overnight at a DelMarVa beach, don\u2019t worry. Leesylvania State Park in Prince William County is a great day option. Not only can you stroll the beach where Native Americans, the Lee and the Fairfax families once lived and where Capt. John Smith visited, you can also partake in several inland trails.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcgov.org\/government\/dept\/park\/locustshade\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Locust Shade Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Triangle<\/em><br \/>\nThis park in Prince William County, next to the Marine Corps Heritage Museum, is more than trails and shaded lawns. There is a 400-seat amphitheater, an 8-acre lake for fishing (bluegill, largemouth bass and crappie) and boating (seasonal pedal boats), a driving range, an 18-hole miniature golf course, batting cages, playgrounds, tennis and volleyball courts and 3.2 miles of nature trails.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/mana\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manassas National Battlefield Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Manassas<\/em><br \/>\nThe only other place in Northern Virginia that could rival the importance of the Civil War is Arlington National Cemetery. While the northeastern neighbor to this battlefield holds a solemn place, Manassas National Battlefield Park is where the South truly tested the North. As the name implies, the park is mostly forested and runs along Quantico Creek. Because of the park\u2019s tremendous size, there are countless loop and out-and-back possibilities here.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwcgov.org\/government\/dept\/park\/silverlake\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silver Lake Regional Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Haymarket<\/em><br \/>\nFour miles of trails for both hikers and horseback-riders surround a 23-acre lake and feature views of meadows and pine trees.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fauquier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"fauquier\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fauquiercounty.gov\/government\/departments-h-z\/parks-and-recreation\/greenways-and-trails\/trail-details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cedar Run Greenway White\u2019s Mill Section<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nAccess via the cul-de-sac just beyond Baymont Inn and Suites off Route 29 north of Warrenton<br \/>\nThis new trail is a paved T-trail in the 70-acre stream valley park and winds through wetlands bordering Cedar Run. Perfect trail for biking, hiking and wildlife watching.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fauquiercounty.gov\/government\/departments-h-z\/parks-and-recreation\/facilities\/parks\/c-m-crockett-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C.M. Crockett Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Midland<\/em><br \/>\nC.M. Crockett Park is the county\u2019s largest lakeside park, and it offers almost everything an outdoorsy person could ask for. There\u2019s fishing, boating, nature trails, picnicking, horseshoes, volleyball, a ropes course, a 1.5-mile cross-country trail and waterskiing. Or, you could relax and take in entertainment at the 200-seat amphitheater.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/sky-meadows#general_information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sky Meadow State Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Delaplane<\/em><br \/>\nScenic views that are the crowning jewel of Virginia are found that this 1,864-acre park with woodlands, pastures and a historic farm. There are 1.5 miles of bridle trails, 24 miles of hiking trails, 9 miles of bike trails and Appalachian Trail access.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fauquiercounty.gov\/government\/departments-h-z\/parks-and-recreation\/greenways-and-trails\/trail-details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stafford Trail<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nAccess points at Stafford Farm (Meetze Road South 1 mile from the Route 29 interchange) and at the end of the Lord Fairfax Community College Connector Trail, Warrenton<br \/>\nThe Stafford Trail is a natural surface trail through 1.1 miles of woods alongside corn fields and Turkey Run with significant elevation changes. The trail crosses two bridges and passes an old uncovered railroad turntable. Benches and dog waste facilities are available as is a bike rack at the Fourth Street parking lot.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dof.virginia.gov\/stateforest\/list\/whitney.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William C. Whitney State Forest<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Warrenton<\/em><br \/>\nIn the center of Fauquier County is the William C. Whitney State Forest, 148 acres of serene environments for hiking and horseback riding.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fredericksburg<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"fredericksburg\" class=\"top-anchor\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburgva.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Alum-Spring-Park-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alum Spring Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nThis scenic park is ideal for a relaxing stroll past its creek and over its bridge. It\u2019s outfitted with picnic shelters and grills, perfect for a family picnic.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburgva.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Cobblestone-Park-37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cobblestone Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nA wooded area with views of Hazel Run, this park features a 1-mile-loop trail.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburgva.gov\/Facilities\/Facility\/Details\/Dixon-Park-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dixon Park<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nDixon Park spans 46 acres of open fields and nature preserve.
