If it weren\u2019t obvious by just looking at the faces of those behind the operation, the family connection at MurLarkey Distilled Spirits is the first stop on the tour. A video timeline tells the story of the Murrays, Larkins and Kellys\u2014the amalgam of last names forms the company name\u2014and you soon learn of their Irish ancestors\u2019 recipes for poitin, an unaged clear whiskey.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t make their whiskey in exactly the same way, but the cousins\u2014Tom Murray<\/strong> and Mike Larkin<\/strong> are owners\u2014are still learning from their elders. The head distiller is George \u201cPapi\u201d Zwetkow<\/strong>, Jim Larkin<\/strong>\u2019s (general manager and brother of Mike) father-in-law, who is a chef by trade. The two are part-owners of Manassas Park\u2019s Park Tap Room.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of women don\u2019t like gin,\u201d Zwetkow says. To turn his claim around, he worked on what he calls a \u201csofter\u201d and \u201cmore pleasant\u201d combination of botanicals where instead of juniper in the starring role, lavender, celery, lemongrass and ginger step in. The team describes it as a floral gin, evoking rose petals.<\/p>\n

But it isn\u2019t all frills at MurLarkey. They also dip into bro drinking culture with Cincerity, a cinnamon whiskey akin to, but subtler than, Fireball. Actually, maybe that\u2019s for the women, too.<\/p>\n
