Fairfax High School’s football season will be cut short. The team’s coaches allegedly violated recruitment rules during the 2024 season. As a result, the team is banned from the upcoming playoffs. It’s also placed on probation for the rest of the current season.
According to Fairfax County Times, the school’s assistant coach, John Harris, allegedly paid rent for a family friend whose son transferred to the school. The student was also a member of the JV football team at Fairfax High.
After the player transferred to The St. James this summer, his parents reportedly made the allegations against the team and its coaches. Harris and head coach Trey Taylor were placed on administrative leave in July.
FCPS Statement
Fairfax County Public Schools officials issued the following statement to WJLA:
“Following an internal investigation, Fairfax County Public Schools has determined Fairfax High School (FHS) football coaching staff violated Virginia High School League (VHSL) policies regarding player recruitment in 2024. As the governing body for all high school athletics in Virginia, VHSL has announced that the team will be on probation for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. This means the FHS football team will not be able to participate in the postseason.
“We want to acknowledge that this news comes as a significant disappointment for the players and their families. However, FCPS remains committed to upholding the values of VHSL programs to ‘promote education, leadership, sportsmanship, character and citizenship for students by establishing and maintaining high standards for school activities and competitions.’”
Hayfield H.S. Recruitment Violations
This is the second time in the last year that a FCPS football team has come under fire for recruiting violations. Last fall, Alexandria’s Hayfield High School’s football coach Darryl Overton was also under investigation for alleged recruitment violations. The team was banned by the Virginia High School League from playing any postseason games in 2024 and 2025. But that ruling was overturned after an appeal to the Fairfax County Circuit Court.
The Fairfax Lions currently hold a 2-0 record in the Patriot Region and an overall record of 3-2. The team takes on the South County Stallions in Lorton on Friday, October 3, at 7 p.m.
