Try These 9 NoVA Delis for Your Next Sandwich

Traditional flavors meet artisan twists at delis and bagel shops across Northern Virginia.

Whether you like it hot or cold, nothing fills you up like a hearty sandwich or bagel. And while we might not be in New York or New Jersey, there are still plenty of classic and artisanal establishments that have made their way south. Here are nine NoVA delis you need to try.

Chewish Deli

You’ll find authentic hand-rolled bagels and tantalizing sandwiches at this Old Town Alexandria mainstay. Chewish serves breakfast sandwiches daily until noon and lunch sandwiches from 10:30 a.m. to close. Pro-tip: Try the Sunrise Reuben on an everything bagel. 807 Pendleton St., Alexandria

Santini’s

This is your New York connection in the heart of NoVA. While classic cold-cut subs and sandwiches are its specialty, pizzas, calzones, and salads are also available. The upside? Santini’s has seven locations, so you’re never far from your next sub. Multiple locations

Call Your Mother

Owners Daniela Moreira and Andrew Dana are on a mission to spread #bagellove with the world. Self-styled as a cross between a New York and Montreal bagel, this trendy spot is anything but traditional. Try the Sun City, a combo of bacon, bodega-style eggs, spicy honey, and cheese on an everything bagel, or the Pastrami Sun City. Multiple area locations

Chutzpah Deli

You’ll never run out of delicious things to try at this New York–style deli, but we won’t fault you for trying. For something other than a sub, try the Chutzpah Poutine, a combo of hand-cut fries, Vermont white cheddar cheese, and housemade gravy. 12214 Fairfax Town Ctr., Fairfax

The Italian Gourmet

This traditional Italian grocer and Vienna staple embodies the adage: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The sandwiches are made with fresh bread and quality ingredients. An excellent example is the Tartufotto — the marriage of truffle ham, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, and Italian dressing on ciabatta. Elegant, simple, and delicious. 505 Maple Ave. W., Vienna

Nozzo Pazzo

At this delicatessen and grocer, the hoagies are just the beginning. You’ll find woodfired New York–style pizza, pastries, fresh pasta, and everything in between, with many products imported from Italy. Don’t forget the pistachio gelato for dessert. If you are heading to Wolf Trap, stop by and pick up a Wolf Trap To-Go Special with two subs, potato salad or coleslaw, water, and a bottle of wine in a picnic bag for $39.99. 122 Branch Rd. SE, Vienna

Main Street Bagel Deli

This NoVA deli features all the classics. The bagels are kettle-boiled and cooked every morning. Order your breakfast or lunch sandwich by the number or grab a bagel with cream cheese that’s mixed on site. Hot sandwiches and 8-inch subs are also on the menu. 10268 Main St., Fairfax

Earl’s Sandwiches

Earl’s is known for roasting its meats in-house and crafting sandwiches that fans rave about. Try the Pork and Fries with fresh roasted pork loin, chipotle mayo, roasted red peppers, and topped with French fries on grilled ciabatta. All of the deli’s soups are housemade. 2605 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

Deli Italiano

This local chain of delis has locations in Great Falls, Lansdowne, Herndon, Arlington, and a newly opened space in Leesburg. It specializes in pizza and wings, but there’s also an expansive menu of subs, cheesesteaks, and deli sandwiches. Multiple area locations
