5 Ways to Meet New People in Northern Virginia

Looking to expand your NoVA social circle? Check out these five opportunities.

By Maggie Roth November 8, 2025 at 7:30 am

Living in an area that’s as work-oriented and transient as the DMV can make it difficult for adults to meet new friends. But with the help of social groups, it’s easier to branch out and connect with like-minded people. Check out these five ways you can make new friends in Northern Virginia.

Athletics

Just like in school, sports are a great way to meet and spend time with friends, stay fit, and have fun playing a game you love. NoVA has several adult sports leagues like FXA and Volo Sports for players of all skill levels. Choose from baseball, soccer, kickball, pickleball, tennis, Frisbee, golf, and more. Or if running is more your speed, check out clubs like the NOVA Running Club, Pacers, or Potomac Runners.

Outdoor Adventures

The NoVA region is full of stunning places to get outside, and the views are more fun with company. Groups like Girls Who Hike Virginia and the Northern Virginia Hiking Club on Meetup organize outings to places like Shenandoah National Park, Great Falls, and the Manassas Battlefield Park.

The ROMEOs

For older gentlemen in search of good conversation and great food, consider joining the ROMEOs for a meal. This group (Retired Old Men Eating Out) organizes regular outings to restaurants around Northern Virginia. There are branches all over the country, including one based in Vienna.

Board Gaming

If you love Monopoly, Risk, or other tabletop games, groups like the NOVA Board Game Group on Facebook and Victory Gamers organize group games around the area. And there are even more opportunities to meet and play with new people on Meetup.

Book Clubs

Meet fellow bibliophiles by joining one of the many book clubs hosted at bookshops around NoVA. Check out Bards Alley in Vienna, One More Page in Arlington, and Old Town Books in Alexandria. There’s a club for every genre, including contemporary fiction, mystery, romance, memoir, and history.
