There’s a new vending machine at Commonwealth Brewing Co., and it doesn’t offer candy or toys. Instead, this machine offers miniature art prints from a local artist.
The Mini Art Vending Machine is a new initiative from Fairfax City Economic Development (FCED), to benefit the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department. Deposit four quarters into the machine and you’ll receive one of nine original designs at random.

“What I love about this project is that it brings together two things we care deeply about — supporting local artists and strengthening our small business community. By placing the vending machine in local shops and gathering places, we’re helping to drive foot traffic, spark curiosity, and encourage people to explore all that Fairfax City has to offer,” said Tara Borwey, assistant director for programs and retail strategy with FCED.
The machine debuted at Commonwealth on October 16, during the City of Fairfax Fall Festival. It will stay there until November 9. It will then move to Fairfax High School for the Holiday Craft Show on November 15 and 16.
The machine currently offers designs by Ash Smith, an Alexandria resident and George Mason University alum. Smith’s print series, Ghost Occupations, includes nine designs of ghosts in everyday settings. “Within my art, I love sharing stories of the mundane mixed with the magical or spooky,” Smith said.
The project is ongoing and will include at least eight to 10 artists. Each artist’s works will be on display for four to six weeks at a time. Currently, FCED is accepting applications for winter- or holiday-themed works, with a deadline of November 6. Artists receive a $150 stipend for nine 2.5-by-3.5-inch designs.
