Scenic hikes, quiet trails, historic sites: You don’t have to leave NoVA to find these picture-perfect spots, hiding in plain sight.
Part of the joy of outdoor jogging is the chance to stop and take it all in. It’s even better when you discover a special spot to rest your legs. Here are some of our favorite running trails.
Burke Lake Park
The 4.7-mile mainly gravel lake loop offers an escape from urban running. There are countless places to admire the scenery. You might even glimpse a bald eagle. Snap a few pics to share on your Instagram feed later. 7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station
Huntington Park Trail
If you bemoan hilly routes, then you’ll be grateful to know that the Huntington Park Trail (aka Cameron Run Greenway) is akin to a track. The main asphalt loop is a little under a mile and frequented by locals. Hop up (or lean on) the levee wall overlooking Cameron Run to see waterfowl splashing in the water. Behind The Parker apartments near Metroview Parkway and Huntington Avenue, Alexandria
Long Bridge Park
This development in National Landing has a nearly 0.75-mile esplanade flanked by playing fields on one side and train tracks and Potomac on the other. It connects to a less populated walking path behind the recreation facility. Catch your breath here, underneath the shade of a tree. 475 Long Bridge Dr., Arlington
Jones Point Park
This Old Town park, nestled on the Mount Vernon Trail near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, features the quaint circa-1855 Jones Point Lighthouse. Spend a moment strolling its riverfront grounds before continuing on your way. 1 Jones Point Dr., Alexandria
Sweet Run State Park
Ashburn running coach Gary Wightman recommends this Loudoun County spot, which boasts a range of trails. You can combine different routes to choose your own adventure and mileage. The 1.8-mile Legacy Loop has a hidden pond. If you find it, rest there. 11661 Harpers Ferry Rd., Hillsboro
