Perfect for older adults and those recovering from injury or sickness, chair yoga has the same stretching benefits as full flows—without the strain.

There are plenty of ways to remain active as you age, but in the times of COVID-19, it can be hard to find ways to squeeze in some fitness, especially as gyms remain closed.

The good news? Many gyms and fitness brands have moved classes online, including yoga studios that offer chair yoga, a gentle form of yoga practiced sitting on a chair, or standing using a chair for support, that allows people of all ages and capabilities to reap the benefits of yoga without straining themselves. It’s also a great starter for seniors who are looking to get into yoga themselves.

Here, we share information on three local studios offering upcoming chair yoga classes via virtual Zoom calls.

Sun & Moon Yoga Studio

Sun & Moon, which has locations in Fairfax and Arlington, has moved all of its classes online during the pandemic, including its weekly chair yoga courses. Taught every Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m., instructor Denyse LeFever leads the class through gentle movements, combining yogic breathing for deep relaxation. To participate, be sure to register for the class at least two hours prior to start time. Once you’ve reserved your spot, a Zoom class invite will be emailed to you up to an hour before the class begins. // drop-in classes and membership prices vary

Inova Virtual Fitness Classes

Inova Well’s Healthy Lifestyle program is livestreaming a variety of fitness classes taught by their instructors, including adaptive chair yoga for all levels. The class is taught every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon, and is a senior-focused class, which means you might even connect with a new friend via the virtual session. Click here to register. // program membership $25 a month

Beloved Yoga

Livestreamed from Reston, Beloved Yoga’s chair classes are a favorite among seniors. The hour-long sessions are streamed on Zoom weekly on Fridays beginning at 1:30 p.m. If you’re ready to advance your practice, or are dealing with grief during the pandemic, Beloved Yoga is also offering other forms of gentle yoga, mat-based practices and yoga for grief and loss virtually during this time as well. // drop-in classes and membership prices vary
