Now that summer is in the rearview mirror, it’s the perfect time to take a dog-friendly beach trip. With the tourists gone, you can enjoy the sand and water without worrying about the crowds or overheating. Here are seven parks near Northern Virginia with dog-friendly beaches.
Aquia Landing Park
With nearly a quarter mile of beach, you’ll find plenty of space for you and your dog. Open year-round, the park is great for fishing, water sports, and other outdoor activities. 2846 Brooke Rd., Stafford, free
Assateague State Park
The park that’s known for wild ponies is also a place for your four-legged friend to enjoy the beach. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend, pets can join you in the park’s day-use areas. Pets are only allowed in specific areas on the Maryland side of the park but are prohibited on the Virginia side. 7307 Stephen Decatur Hwy., Berlin, Maryland, $5 per vehicle
Cape Charles Beach
An Eastern Shore beach trip is in the works for you and your furry friend. Dogs are allowed on the beach during the off-season and before 9 a.m. and after 8 p.m. from May 1 to Labor Day. Doggie waste stations are located along the boardwalk. Bay Avenue, Cape Charles, free
Fenwick Island State Park
From the start of October to the end of April, your dog can join you on the beaches of Delaware State Parks. Pups have access to the entire beach during the off-season, just make sure to avoid bird nesting areas. Delaware Route 1, Fenwick Island, Delaware, $10 to park
First Landing State Park
This pet-friendly park is the perfect spot to enjoy a beach trip with the whole family. The park’s 1.5 miles of beachfront give you direct access to the Chesapeake Bay. Pets are allowed in the non-designated swimming areas, including The Narrows and boat launch. 2500 Shore Dr., Virginia Beach, $7–$10 to park
Leesylvania State Park
The Woodbridge park is a beautiful spot to catch some water views with your pup. The park doesn’t have a designated swimming area, and swimming is discouraged for your pooch because of the swift currents. But the park has wonderful trails that will keep your four-legged friend’s sense of smell aroused. 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Dr., Woodbridge, $10 to park
Quiet Waters Park
Head to Annapolis to find a beach just for the dogs. You’ll need to keep your pets on leashes. Only two dogs per adult are allowed. If they still have energy after their swim, head over to the park’s dog park for one last play session before heading home. Humans are not allowed to swim or wade in the water. 600 Quiet Waters Park Rd., Annapolis, Maryland, $6 to park
