5 Ways to Be a Better Pet Owner

We’ve rounded up some quick tips to help you up your pet parent game.

By Kate Oczypok January 2, 2025 at 8:21 am

Pet owners know that our furry family members make our lives better. They give us joy, companionship, and unconditional love. Return the favor by learning how to be the best pet parent possible. We’ve rounded up five quick tips to help.

1. Learn to read your pet’s body language.

Dr. Amy Pike of Animal Behavior Wellness Center in Fairfax and Richmond recommends learning how to read your pet’s body language to understand what they’re trying to communicate. She suggests reading books like Doggie Language and Kitty Language, both by Lili Chin, as helpful tools.

2. Schedule regular check-ups and vaccinations.

Like humans, scheduling your pet’s regular check-ups is key to making sure they are as healthy as they can be. For dogs, the American Kennel Club (AKC) stresses the importance of keeping your pup up-to-date on vaccinations. Core vaccines to prevent rabies, parvo, and Bordetella are essential in protecting your pet against dangerous diseases.

3. Train and socialize your pet.

Teaching your dog basic commands like sit and stay not only strengthens the human and animal bond, it also fulfills a dog’s desire to please their owner. Socializing your dog is also important, and the AKC suggests taking them to parks, a pet store, or a walk through your neighborhood to expose them to different people and situations. Don’t forget to praise them for behaving calmly and respectfully around other dogs or humans!

4. Prepare for emergency situations.

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends having an evacuation kit at the ready in case you must leave your home with your pet due to a weather emergency like a hurricane. Also, have a plan in place if you are suddenly unable to care for your pet. For everyday situations at home, if you have a particularly mischievous pet that frequently eats things they shouldn’t, having items like hydrogen peroxide on hand can be helpful to induce vomiting and avoid an expensive trip to the emergency vet.

5. Know when to say goodbye.

Pets are considered family, and it is often hard to know the right time to say goodbye. NoVA Mobile Vet offers animal hospice care and euthanasia. They explain on their website, “Unfortunately, animals do not communicate as human do, so concerned pet owners need to monitor their pets’ behavior to look for unusual changes. There may be symptoms to watch out for depending on the cause of illness.” The decision to euthanize your pet is not an easy one, but it is crucial if your pet is in pain, or their quality of life has dwindled significantly. NoVA Mobile Vet offers in-home euthanasia so your pet can pass away in a calm, familiar environment.
