Virginia’s First Buc-ee’s Opens

Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s is officially open. The Texas-based travel station is located at 6500 Buc-ee’s Boulevard in Rockingham County near mile marker 240 on Interstate 81.

The new 74,000-square-feet Buc-ee’s is home to 120 fueling stations, 600 parking spaces, and 20 electric vehicle charging stations. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin attended the grand-opening ceremony on Monday. “Here we are today with the first — of many — Buce-ee’s in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Youngkin said, adding that the location “also represents 200 great paying jobs.”

If you’re planning a trek to the new location, Northern Virginia Magazine food critic Alice Levitt, a former Texan, says “The best things about Buc-ee’s for a food writer like me are the barbecue sandwiches and kolaches. The ‘cue is legitimately high-quality, with just a hint of smoke. Kolaches? They’re fluffy, lightly sweet Texas-Czech pastries that may be filled with anything from cherries to smoky sausages and cheese.”

And Levitt says there are reasons to stop at Buc-ee’s even if you don’t plan to eat there. “The expansive bathrooms are decorated in local art and are reliably spotless,” she says. “If you’re passing through Rockingham County on Interstate 81, it’s definitely the place to stop for a kolache, one of myriad varieties of jerky, and a clean restroom.”

Two other Virginia Buc-ee’s are also in the works, according to Virginia Business. One will be located in New Kent County east of Richmond at Exit 211 off Interstate 64. It’s expected to open in 2027. The other is planned for Stafford County near Exit 140 off Interstate 95. However, the Stafford location still needs to pass zoning approvals.
